Zone Diet Fat Percentage

How do reduce amount of body fat, but retain lean muscle w/out going on Atkins-type diet or having no energy?
You know, how do you reduce percentage of body fat w/out becoming emaciated-looking? How do you “tip the balance” of body fat to lean muscle mass ratio without feeling tired or getting sick…You need enough carbohydrates to have energy. I’m not interested in an Atkins diet. The Soy Zone is a book I read and liked, but what kind of exercises, repetitions, amount of weight should one do?
