Does anyone know how long it will take to lose 75lbs????? well i weight 195 lbs and 5’6 and i am 19 years old and i want to start eating right and lose weight…So do anyone how long that would take…and some tips!!!! Thanks!

From someone who has managed to lose 40 lbs. so far, I can tell you that there’s no possible way of knowing exactly how long it will take the pounds to come off. I can tell you, though, it takes a lot of patience and will-power. On average, I’ve read that with proper diet and exercise most individuals trying to lose weight can count, on average, between 1-2 lbs. And that’s probably the healthiest rate of weight loss. Crash diets are NOT the way to go!

As corny as it sounds, one of the best things you can do is keep a positive (and, if that seems hard, realitistic) attitude. You need to realize that it’s a commitment and a total lifestyle overhaul and not something that you can change over night. This said, you shouldn’t get discouraged. One of the best things that really kept me motivated was reminding myself daily that I had made progress, even if it was just two or three days of eating properly. You constantly need to affirm your progress in a positive way.

With regards to diet — and believe me, I tried EVERYTHING — the best thing to do is eat sensibly. I know people will encourage you to count calories, up your lean protein intake, and even suggest grapefruit or celery-only regiments. To all this I say no. What I did was first make a commitment not to eat after 6 p.m. I tend to be an early eater, so after I finished dinner between 5 and 6, I consumed nothing except water or tea in the evenings. If starving, I’d turn to a piece of fruit. (Evening munching was my worst habit.) Then I just made sensible choices. I downgraded my plate size — that really helps with portion control — and I made sure that 75% of my plate was filled with veggies, and the remainder with a healthy complex carb (like brown rice) and a lean protein (like chicken or fish). I got rid of all oil, except olive; stopped frying things; cut out on store-bought processed foods; and made sure that at all of my meals a sizable chunk was made up of fruit (in the a.m.) or veggies (lunch and dinner).

Also, I cut out as many refined sugars as possible. I stopped buying candy, chocolate, prepared desserts, ice cream, and even sliced bread and white pasta. I know this sounds a bit extreme, but replacing things like white flour in your diet with whole wheat and whole grain makes a huge difference.

Honestly, the best tip is sensible eating. If you think it’s unhealthy for you, chances are it is, so reach for something that your body will appreciate! I tried diets where I had to measure out my turkey slices or my cucumber sticks, and that just left me feeling deprived and hungry. This being said, though, do allow yourself a treat once every two weeks. I did this and it helps you not feel like you’ve forever cut out your favourite foods. For me, it’s potato chips, so once every few weeks, I would treat myself to a small bag (not the large ones), and that proved to be sufficient.

With regards to exercise, do what you enjoy! I think it doesn’t make much sense to kill yourself doing something you dislike in the first place. For me, I hate cardio, but I found that power walking was something I enjoyed immensely, so I did it three times a week, and, for two days, I lifted free weights. One day a week I did yoga, and one day a week I rested. If you can try to commit to a minimum of 20-30 minutes of movement per day, it helps. Don’t try to overdo the exercising with hours upon hours of strenuous activity because you’ll exhaust yourself and it’s unlikely you’ll commit to it long term.

And, above all, be patient! You can do it! Just remember to love yourself in the process and the new body and healthier you that you’re sculpting!
