Sunshine Weight Loss
What could be causing these problems in my 14 year old cat other than old age?
I have a wonderful orange male tabby (neutered, of course!) named Sunshine. He is my buddy and I love him dearly. Lately, he hasn’t been looking that great. His personality has remained the same though. He has been vaccinated for everything so it’s nothing that could’ve been contracted. His fur looks really rough and disheveled. He does have a flea allergy that causes hair loss in patches which we regulate with cortisone shots (WE TRY NOT TO DO THEM TOO OFTEN AS THEY AREN’T GOOD FOR KITTIES!) and frontline plus every month. He’s lost a lot of weight and feels quite bony. He doesn’t get around as well as he used to. I used to have a orange tabby years ago that developed diabetes in his senior years so I’m going to have Sunshine tested even though he’s not drinking and urinating excessively. What else should I have him tested for? What kinds of bloodwork can they do or rather, what SHOULD they test for??? And about how much do they tests cost roughly estimated? THANKS!
Check for thyroid problems and also kidney/liver function… chronic renal failure is one of the most common health problems that affects older cats. When my sister’s cat got it she lost a lot of hair and weight and got very lethargic and wouldn’t eat anything. Talk to your vet, I’m sure she’ll know what all to test for. Good luck!
Edit: Canned food is a great idea, it’s much better for their systems, kitten food is a BAD idea it will make many conditions worse! Older animals typically require LESS protein, too much can cause severe organ problems. Kitten food is very high in fat and protein because that’s what they need as BABIES only. Please do not take that advice!!! Adult food only!
