The Diverticulitis Diet: I Need More Fiber!

As they say, life begins at 40… and so could be a lot of illnesses as well.

The Diverticulitis Diet is a type of medical diet for those who has diverticulosis, a health condition more common to those who are already 40 years old and above (50% of 60-year-old Americans have this) and involves the digestive tract having those diverticula or “pouches” that tend to bulge or swell.

Actually, the “pouches” or diverticula usually appear on the large intestine but they also appear in the following areas of the body:

  • small intestine
  • stomach
  • esophagus

Those who include abundant servings of high-fiber vegetables in their diet need not worry about developing diverticulosis, since this illness is principally due to a low-fiber diet. Those who are suffering from it should observe the Diverticulitis Diet and begin eating the following foods:

  • eggs
  • white rice
  • dairy products such as milk and cheese
  • enriched bread
  • yogurt
  • noodles (like macaroni)
  • fish
  • meat

As for the drinks:

  • water
  • tea
  • plain/black coffee
  • juice from any fruit (don’t include the pulp)

When undergoing this medical diet, one should refrain from consuming the following:

  • strawberry
  • tomato
  • okra
  • eggplant

one goes through the diet, the amount of fiber taken each day will be gradually increased from five to 15 grams of it, allowing the necessary adjustment period for the digestive system. In general, the Diverticulitis Diet advises those with diverticulosis and even those who do not have one (for prevention purposes) to observe the following:

  • Consume plenty of servings (25 to 30 grams each day) of foods rich in fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables) or you may also try those fiber supplements (like psyllium)
  • Exercise regularly (aids in regular bowel movement)
  • Keep yourself well-hydrated (even if you are not thirsty, drink water)
  • You don’t have to wait until you get 40 to try on this diet. Remember the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure?” Well, it suits very well this medical diet, and Diet Fads has additional information to provide.
