Celebrity weight/muscle gain?

I don’t understand how celebrities like Gerard Butler and Christian Bale can put on 30 or 40 lbs of muscle for a role. I could work out 5 hours a day like them, and would end up losing weight that I can’t afford to lose, as I am already skinny. I don’t want to know how they became fit and muscular, but how did they even put that weight on in the first place, and then maintain it while working out for hours a day 5 days a week. I can’t even seem to gain weight by eating double what the average person eats.. There is a multi-billion dollar industry in America for weight loss, but I feel like my fast metabolism is almost a curse. What do I have to do to gain weight?
The multiply your weight by 19 is good information, and I will try to get in that many calories, but wouldn’t that make it harder for someone who weighs more to gain pounds, isn’t it the same for everyone regardless of weight?

Two big main points:

1. Daily Caloric Surplus
2. Progressive Overload

Like some of the other answers said, you need to take in excess calories, this is a caloric surplus. You need to get these excess calories from “clean” foods (the less the food is processed, the better). Lot’s of protein and whole foods wherever possible (replace protein powder with chicken breasts (except right after workouts, that’s what whey protein is for)). As long as you are taking in more calories than you bern, you will gain weight. They type of weight you gain will be determined by the types of food you eat. The cleaner you eat, the higher the percentage of weight gained will be muscle, as long as you are training methods are right.

Progressive overload means that you do more work in the gym each time you lift. You progressively overload your muscles every time you lift, making you body believe in order to do it’s job (survive) it needs to grow bigger muscles. This can be done by three main methods, use all to your advantage when lifting. Weight lifted, reps, and rest time. If you can lift more weight, do more reps of the same weight, or rest less time the next time you lift in a particular exercise, you are experiencing progressive overload.

Also, use as many compound-muscle exercises as you can, training is individual to each person. Some can gain muscle lifting five days per week, while others can only gain while lifting three days per week because their bodies nervous system fatigues easier, so just experiment with different training and see what works for you. Also, never train more than 1 1/2 hours in a lifting session; training hours a day obviously isn’t working for you and probably wouldn’t work for anybody unless they were on steroids/pro-hormones for expatiated recovery times.

So, if you tear down your muscles in the gym using progressive overload, and use proper nutrition/rest to let the muscles recover/grow when you are away from the weights (which should be most of the time), you’ll be well on your way to gaining muscle.
