Best Weight Loss Product: Why Your Scale Is a Loser
When making a switch to a healthy lifestyle, dieters often rely on a scale as the best weight loss product, one that gauges their success. But what happens if the scale doesn’t move?
What happens if your weight loss is so slow, you can hardly measure it? Is the scale your best friend then?
The answer is no. When you make healthy and lasting lifestyle changes with the goal of losing weight permanently, the scale should not be the only product you rely upon. You can continue to use it, but you should regard it as one of many tools you use to gauge your success.
Why a Scale Isn’t Always Accurate
The scale you have sitting in your bathroom is not a precise tool for measurement. Even the scale at your doctor’s office isn’t infallible. These scales can be effected by many different factors, such as the surface they are sitting upon; a little extra jostling when you bring them home from the store in the trunk of your car; and especially in the instance of your doctor’s office scale, the need of calibration because so many people of vastly differing size have used them.
An engineer has a precise scale for measurements when building machines, but he would never rely on a bathroom scale for precise measurement. And neither should you. Regard your scale as a more-or-less accurate estimate, and move on.
Muscle Weighs More than Fat
Now that we’ve established that your scale isn’t always as accurate as you wish, let’s discuss the difference between muscle and fat. If you have implemented a strength training program and have been eating better foods, chances are you are building muscle as you shed fat.
So why isn’t that number on the scale budging? Quite simply, muscle weighs more than fat. That’s why it’s crucial to use a tape measure along with the scale to judge your progress.
Muscle is more compact than fat, taking up to three times less room in your body. So if your scale isn’t moving, but the circumference of your hips, belly, and thighs are—congratulations! You are shedding fat and replacing it with lean muscle.
Your clothing will fit better, you’ll look better, and you’ll feel better too. Keep in mind that as you build muscle, your metabolism speeds up, so the number on the scale will begin dropping again eventually.
Look at the Big Picture
When it comes to weight loss, let’s look at the big picture. How do you feel? Are your clothes fitting better? Did you have to buy new clothes, because your old ones were too big? Think about any health issues you had before starting your weight loss plan. If you were pre-diabetic, what does your physician say now? If you have arthritis, are you feeling less pain and joint stiffness?
Check out your blood pressure and cholesterol rates. Have they improved? If you have a positive answer for any of these questions, then you are well on your way to a healthy
lifestyle and permanent weight loss. The bathroom scale is not the best weight loss product—it’s just a small part of the overall big picture.
